Police cyclists’ £120,000 legacy to disabled children

A team of cyclists from Staffordshire Police, has announced that over the last five years it has raised a staggering £120,000 to send 10 children, with life limiting conditions, on a once-in-a-lifetime holiday to Disney World, in Florida.

The Bobbies on Bikes for Kids team (BOB4K) recently completed a 440 mile cycling challenge across northern France, adding to a growing list of annual cycle challenges it has created to raise funds for Caudwell Children, the Staffordshire based charity that provides practical and emotional support to disabled children and their family.

“Our latest BOB4K challenge, Beaches and Battlefields, saw 12 cyclists taking on a relatively flat route across Normandy,” explained Sergeant Stevon Marsh, one of the organisers of the event. “However, the stifling heat made it extremely difficult.

“But we’re used to the mental and physical stresses and strains of riding long distances having cycled from Land’s End to John O’Groats, Blackpool Tower to the Eiffel Tower, Cologne to Stoke-on-Trent and 550 miles around Wales, since 2014.”

With this year’s challenge netting a cool £18,211.57 the total that the BOB4K team has raised over the last five years now stands at a whopping £120,000.

“I can’t thank the 85 cyclists who have taken part in the challenges enough for their dedication, determination and commitment, often in times of adversity.

“It’s a truly life changing amount for the children that we support,” enthused Stevon.

The team began fundraising for the charity after learning of the difficulties associated with taking a disabled child, with a life limiting condition, on holiday.

As Stevon explained: “Many parents of disabled children can only dream of taking their child on a holiday to Disney World, and the thought of attempting a long overseas flight, without expensive medical support, fills them with dread.

“However, Caudwell Children’s holiday provides 24 hour professional medical support for the duration of the trip as they take a team of paediatric doctors and nurses.

“Not only that, the charity takes a group of over 40 enthusiastic volunteers to help each family.

“This allows parents to create happy memories with their children, and their siblings, for perhaps the first time in their lives.”

On this year’s challenge the team took time out to mark the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War, and to commemorate the British and Commonwealth soldiers who were killed in it, by laying a wreath at the Menin Gate Memorial, in Ypres.

“It was an amazing effort by an extraordinary group of people,” said Kerrie Davies, associate director of events at Caudwell Children. “They’re energy and enthusiasm to raise funds for disabled children in Staffordshire is remarkable, and once again they’ve given two disabled children from this region the opportunity to have the experience of a lifetime.

“We can’t thank them enough!”
